Help shape the future of the Diocese of London – take survey to give your views

On Friday 3 October 2025 it was announced that our diocesan bishop, the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Sarah Mullally DBE, had been nominated to become the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury. While this news is still being received around the world, in London the process to discern who Bishop Sarah’s successor will be started immediately. 

What happens next 

The first stage of the process is undertaken by what is known as the ‘Vacancy in See Committee’. The name derives from the fact that there will be a vacancy for the office of diocesan bishop in the ‘See’ (or bishop’s seat) of the cathedral in London. 

The Committee is tasked with producing a statement of needs for the diocese, to discern what character, skills, experience and other qualities we will be looking for in a new diocesan bishop for London. This is an exciting missional opportunity as we reflect on future opportunities for the gospel in London! 

Your voice matters 

The Committee would love to hear from parishes, deaneries, Area Councils, LDBS schools, youth groups, other interested parties, as well as individuals. 

We have made this consultation available online and a QR code is supplied on our website, so you can add this to notice sheets and newsletters. There is also a document to aid group discussions. All responses need to be submitted within the online survey and the best feedback will be a few bullet points rather than a long paragraph.
